Together: Through the eyes of Mr. Sylven - An Open Letter re: Japan Trip, Hard Work and a Strong Community
Dear Rundle community,
This is an open letter of gratitude to our Rundle community, and especially to everyone touched by the College grade 9 trip to Japan.
I will be honest, it’s been a tough week for me. Since January, I’ve poured my heart and soul into putting together a Japan trip that our grade 9s would remember forever. The years that I lived in Japan held some of the best times of my life and I couldn’t wait to see the wide-eyed faces of our students as they first strolled down a bustling street in Tokyo.
When we first learned about Typhoon Hagibis on Monday, I was confident we’d be unaffected in any real way. Even by the parent meeting on Wednesday evening, I was convinced there would just be a delay for a few hours. The students seemed more excited than ever. When the flight was cancelled later that night… ugh! I was overcome with fear and sadness that this incredible experience might actually be jeopardized.
Needless to say, I’ve slept little and worked lots to salvage the trip. I’m tired, yet the Rundle community has rallied in support. Staff have both given me space to work as well as checked in to see if I’m okay. (They know how much this trip means to me.) Parents have sent impactful messages like this:
- I am sure you are working tirelessly to come up with a positive solution.
- I’m sure it’s tough to be you today ... we appreciate all your efforts!
- No matter what happens, I just want to thank you for all of the time and effort you put in to make this an amazing experience for the students.
- You are doing a great job handling a challenging situation.
With heartfelt appreciation for your support this week, and hopeful anticipation for salvaging the trip, thank you.
Sincerely,
Gary Sylven
