Week 7 | Book 7

Miracle and Wonder: Conversations with Paul Simon

By Malcolm Gladwell, Bruce Headlam

Those of you who know me, know that I am obsessed with creativity, music, audiobooks and Malcolm Gladwell... as you can probably guess, I am in absolute love with Gladwell's newest book!  In truth, this is one of these books that I would have loved to have finished in a single sitting, however, it was so good that I wanted to savour it over the course of several weeks.

As you travel through Paul Simon's life, in his own voice, his own words and accompanied by his own music, you get a true feeling for his incredible genius.  Along the way, Gladwell provides editorial insights about the nature of genius and what may account for some of Paul Simon's ability to create such incredibly deep and textured works of art that span generations, continents and musical genres.

A highlight for me is enjoying Gladwell's ability to use the medium of audiobook to its full potential.  We are able to hear the music that Paul Simon is talking about, while he is talking about it.  On occasion, you hear Paul Simon grab his guitar and demonstrate exactly what he is discussing - it is pure magic.

Furthermore, the nature of creativity and creation are deeply explored by Gladwell.  He takes us into the creative process of inventors, artists and musicians to breathe life to their work and their creations.
