Together: Supporting Academy Students as they enter Post Secondary - Through the Eyes of Nicole Jordan
This year Rundle Academy piloted a post-secondary transition program called, The Traverse. The purpose of this program is to support students as they transition into their first year of post-secondary education. As demonstrated in academic research, all students, but particularly those with learning disabilities (LD) and/or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), can be successful in transitioning into post-secondary education learning environments if they have the following skills and attributes: self-determination, learning strategies, and competence using accommodations. Rundle Academy focuses on the development of these skills; however, based on the academic literature and feedback from our alumni, these skills may require further development in their new learning environment.
The focus of the program is to provide weekly coaching and mentorship to support students with their time management, self-advocacy, goal setting, study habits and organization. At the midpoint in this pilot year, the greatest value in the program is student wellbeing. Maintaining the connection to the Rundle community ensures that our students continue to be supported through this important transition toward independence. Furthermore, the weekly connections ensure that students are effectively managing the challenges and stresses they face in the transition to post-secondary school.
We will be launching this program for our 2020 graduates in the coming months. Please contact Ms. Nicole Jordan if you have any further questions.
