Recently I read an article from Stanford News titled, "'Embrace the struggle': Stanford education professor challenges common beliefs about teaching and learning."
What struck me about the article was something that I had heard years ago. The essence of what I had read, and what applies to this article, are two statements:
"You are so smart."
and
"You are creative" or "You are a hard worker."
What we are learning is that 'Smart' is typically something we cannot quantify, it is an abstract concept that adults, let alone kids, cannot identify specific items with. Whereas, being 'good at learning' or a 'hard worker' are things we can identify with and easily work towards. Jo Boaler, the author of Limitless Mind and subject of the Stanford News article, seems to agree.
For another perspective on the same topic, it is worth looking at Carol Dweck's work on Growth Mindsets.
This is but one tiny gem of many that are in this article!
Enjoy!
