I’ve come to Toronto to take part in the first session of Cohort 21. It is a professional learning opportunity for 50ish independent school educators in Eastern Canada to grow and learn throughout the year through in person and online sessions. They come with their own question(s) around a topic that they want to learn about. They take it apart and wrestle with it throughout the year, with the support of their Cohort 21 team, coaches and facilitator! They are challenged in their thinking and supported in the choices they make. They tweet, blog and share the ups and downs of their journey.
How did I land up here? I noticed #cohort21 on twitter and thought it looked interesting. I reached out to one of the cofounders, Garth Nichols, who I happened to follow on twitter and we had a phone conversation about it. Turns out, I was able to take a design course with Garth and Justin Medved, the other cofounder, this summer and they graciously invited me to attend one or all of their four sessions to see the process in action.
Our world is changing. Communication is changing. Education is changing and the way teachers learn professionally is changing. We don’t have to be on top of it all, but by finding a few key people, we can participate in some exciting opportunities that may change the way we think and act, all with the goal of positively impacting student learning!
