Range: Why Generalists Triumph in a Specialized World

By: David Epstein

David Epstein's book, "Range: Why Generalists Triumph in a Specialized World," is one of the books that I am coming back to this year.  I read this book for the first time in 2019 and have come back to it at least twice since.  I think what draws me back to this book are the implications for teaching, learning and the education system.

Epstein opens his book with a narrative about the difference between Tiger Woods and Roger Federer and their pathways to success.  Epstein takes on huge topics such as the 10,000-hour principle, the advantages of servants and the nature of intelligence tests.  All the while, Epstine provides insights into how we avoid cognitive entrenchment and gain an advantage by engaging in early sampling.  Most importantly, the emphasis on the 'long game' of learning is incredibly impactful for our overall education system.
