Why do I choose to travel with students?

The short answer: Because it’s uncomfortable.

To make sense of that response, know that I started travelling across Canada and the USA for sports when I was about 12 years old. Those trips were a lot of fun, but most experiences were not unlike what I could find back in Calgary.

When I was 17 years old, I was able to travel to Japan and what a disappointment it was! I found it so disorienting, confusing, and even irritating at times. I landed back in Calgary very happy to return to the comforts of home.

Then it started to sink in. Without even knowing it, a seed of curiosity had been planted in Japan and it started to grow. Out of the discomfort grew a new perspective of how and why people think, feel and act the way they do. It wasn’t long before I was yearning for that discomfort again and my new found enthusiasm for travel and adventure ultimately set the direction for the rest of my life.

Now I travel with students in the hopes of planting that same seed of curiosity in their minds, transforming discomfort into perspective.
