Be Well: Seen, Known and Loved

In his session, “Building a Culture of Resilience for Staff and Students,” Dr. Michael Unger from Dalhousie University spoke passionately about the question,

“When a student gets to school, is there someone greeting them by name?”

Ultimately, to help our kids become resilient, they need to be seen, known and loved… it’s almost as simple as that.

Obviously, as Dr. Ungar makes these statements, I immediately am drawn to the imagery of Mr. Clark greeting our kids as they are dropped off each day, or Mrs. Allen standing in the Great Hall between classes or Mr. Burla coaching volleyball almost every night.  I then think of our classroom teachers, home room teachers, teacher advisors, coaches, directors and sponsors. And sometimes, it is the Mr. Moodie, Ms. Ann, Mrs. Hewlett or. Ms. Pumphrey who give them the attachment they so desire. At the end of it all, I know we have a long way to go, but I do hope that at Rundle we can feel as though our kids have many adults in their lives who see them, know them and love them.
