Be Well: Mental Health Awareness by SHS Peer Support - Guest Blog

November is a month that many people associate with Movember. The Movember foundation works towards awareness surrounding men’s health as a result of rising rates of suicide and other health issues in Canadian males. Throughout the month we organized a friendly competition in the school which; we coupled with education and awareness. We worked hard to raise awareness about men’s health and we even put our own spin on the foundation’s tool for change: Moustaches! Thus the competition was born… however we realized not everyone could participate, so we also decided to sell bracelets with the slogan: “It’s time to talk”. All the proceeds from the sales of bracelets are going to support the Movember Foundation in the hopes that a difference can be made . The goal of this month was to educate our classmates on some of the warning signs surrounding a friends declining mental health and how to simply talk about it. Boys are known to internalize their problems and often have trouble talking to each other about things affecting them. A direct result of this is the rising suicide rates in teens. In the school we worked to raise awareness on the issue and get boys talking. I hope that through our efforts this year and November especially we can make a meaningful impact in Rundle's community. On behalf of Peer Support thank you for supporting our efforts.  Author: Josh K. '20
