Be Curious: Improving Math Curriculums

If you are ever looking for a new perspective, look no further than Freakonomics - the books, the website and the podcast will invariably satiate your curiosity.

Recently on their podcast, they gave a good hard look at math, the curriculum and teaching.

There are so many big questions that come from their research, it is worth the time it'll take you to listen to it.

A few take aways to peak your curiosity:

- current math curriculums are inspired by (a) Ivy League School Admissions in the early 1900's and then (b) the space race of the 60's

- the SAT has changed their approach to testing math - away from the previous math curriculums - and now have a renewed focus on data analysis and critical thinking

- universities have observed that students are most successful if they have a deep understanding of (a) basic math concepts (b) statistics, problem solving and data analysis (c) linear algebra - further, a deep understanding of these is much better than a shallow understanding of many topic.

Needless to say, I am only scratching the surface of this amazing and thought provoking conversation on the future of math!

Enjoy!
