In 1805, if you listened to music, you heard it live. Every time. Today, perhaps 1% of all the music we hear is live, if that.

In 1805, if you listened to a lecture for school or work, you heard it live. Every time. Today, that’s still true.
That’s crazy.

That IS crazy! He goes on to share an idea he has for online classes which has some plausibility. Don't get me wrong, I am a big believer in human connection and the importance of students having a physical connection with their teacher and peers. But, I acknowledge that times have changed. On twitter, I often see the question, Would students come to your class if they didn't have to? I think it's a fabulous and relevant question. What am I doing as a teacher that makes my students feel valued and important? Now, more than ever, we need face to face interaction - let's make sure our students feel connected and that they belong.

I also think it is an absolute necessity that what we teach is relevant to real life. Students have the ability to learn about celebrities, sports stars, local, national and international news of the day within seconds of being online. As teachers, we need to ensure we are providing our students with as much relevant and real-time information as we can. Otherwise, why wouldn't they watch a video on the same topic by someone who is more entertaining?

Connection is more important now than ever! The world around education has changed...so, let's make sure our students are receiving the personal care they need to foster a learning-rich environment and let's ensure we are keeping our classes relevant to the world around us. Otherwise, let's watch lectures online.
