Be Well: Unlocking Happiness with Jennifer Moss

Today, we spent the morning thinking about ‘social contagions’ and, in particular, happiness.  Jennifer Moss presented us with personal stories and compelling research on how, through our actions, we can inspire others to be happier at work.

Jennifer took time to help us empathize with the younger generation and the impact a high paced social media environment on their brains and bodies.

In particular, I really enjoyed Jennifer’s straight talk on the realities of work and happiness.  A good example of these moments was when she spoke about her article in the Harvard Business Review when she states, “When Passion Leads to Burnout,” she is quoted as saying, “You’ve no doubt heard the well-worn advice that ‘if you do what you love, you’ll never work a day in your life.’  It’s a nice idea but a total myth.”

In conclusion, Jennifer took us through her model for happiness, healthiness, and high performing people.  The HEROGEM model is made up of the following components:

Hope, Efficacy, Resilience, Optimism, Gratitude, Empathy, Mindfulness

Among the dozens of gems of knowledge and inspiration that Jennifer offered, here are a few of my favourites:

Make your bed… it’s a habit that will bring hope.  (Hope)

We need to create a culture of ‘try’ in our schools. (Resilience)

The more time we spend together with one another, the happier we will be.Instead of ‘I have to’ - change your thoughts and words by saying, ‘I get to.’ (Optimism)

Stop using the word ‘always’ - our brain believes hard problems will never be solved.
Gratitude is the gateway drug to happiness. (Gratitude)

Simply send someone a ‘thank you’ note to someone you care about… do it now - seriously, if you are reading this - text someone a nice message - it’ll brighten their day - and yours.

Times of stress are times of growth - our most uncomfortable moments are the greatest opportunities for growth.

We need to meet chaos with calm - in work, at home and in life.

If you have the chance to hear, watch or read Jennifer - I’d encourage you to do so… I virtually guarantee you’ll be happier for it.
